Fire Door Bussiness
A practical guide to fire rated door bussiness
Designed as a part of a passive fire protection system, fire rated doors were not thought much
before the massive fire in 1660 in England, UK. After this catastrophic event, engineers started
thinking about how to reduce the spread of fire and smoke between separate compartments of a
structure and to enable safe egress from a building or structure or ship.
First, they began with improving the integrity of the wooden doors used in residential buildings.
Today, with the help of the intumescent strips inside door panels and frames, a wooden door can
stand up to 120 minutes of fire exposure without collapsing and hence seperating compartments
of a building. An intumescent strip is designed to expand when temperatures reach beyond
200°C to seal the gaps between the door and frame.

When closed, the door forms a barrier to stop the spread of fire
When opened, the door provides a means of escape
